The Fires that Swept Through
By Devon Williams
Devastating wildfires ravaged Los Angeles, especially the Palisades and Eaton neighborhoods. These fires, exacerbated by high winds and dry conditions, have led to mass evacuations and destruction of homes and businesses.
WHO IS IMPACTED?
The residents, businesses, and local authorities (like CAL FIRE, Los Angeles Fire Department, and National Guard) are key groups impacted and responding to the situation.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Devastating wildfires burning in the Los Angeles area, particularly the Palisades and Eaton fires. The fires have caused mass evacuations, destroyed homes, businesses, and landmarks, and claimed many lives.
Firefighters and emergency responders are battling the fires, and state and national resources are being deployed to help contain the situation.
WHERE DID IT HAPPEN?
The fires are primarily affecting areas of Los Angeles, specifically the Palisades and Eaton regions. The fires have also reached iconic locations like celebrity homes and Hollywood landmarks (e.g., the Hollywood sign).
WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?
The fires began around New Year’s 2025, continuing into January. As of the latest updates, authorities are still working on containment efforts, though some areas remain under threat.
WHY?
The exact cause of the fires remains unclear but experts speculate that the dry conditions, strong winds, and potentially climate change have contributed to the rapid spread and intensity of the fires. The fires have become a disaster of unprecedented scale due to these factors.
HOW?
The fires have spread due to high winds, which have fueled their rapid expansion, especially in areas already suffering from drought conditions. Firefighting efforts are ongoing, with teams from CAL FIRE, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the National Guard working around the clock to contain the blaze. Authorities are also helping with evacuations and providing shelter to displaced residents.
NOW!
The Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles have been fully contained as of February 1, 2025, after nearly a month of activity. These fires were part of a series of devastating blazes that affected the region over the past month. The containment marks a significant milestone in the firefighting efforts.

Student Spotlight
Nicholas Dreckett
The student that was nominated for student of the month is Nicholas Dreckett. He was nominated for being gracious with everything that he has.
He was also nominated for finding new opportunities and sharing them with his fellow classmates. When asked what he likes about being part of the school community he said:
"I love the energy and charisma that we all share with each other. For, the most part, we are a loving student body that cares and looks out for each other."
Some advice he would like to share with other students who are trying to be the next student of the month is that they should just be themselves.
When asked about his challenges he says they are his workload, balancing personal life, teen life, school, and getting to school early.

University of the Arts: What Happens Next?
By Kataliyah Johnson, The PPACS Digital Times
The University of Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a renowned university dedicated to nurturing creativity and innovation in performing arts. It offered students a wide variety of programs in fields such as fine arts, design, music, dance, theater, and film. UArts was celebrated for its vibrant arts community and its prime location in the heart of Philadelphia, which provided students with opportunities to engage with the city’s rich cultural landscape.
However, the University of the Arts faced significant financial challenges over the years, struggling with declining enrollment and rising operational costs. Despite efforts to stabilize its finances through various fundraising campaigns and cost-cutting measures, the university couldn't overcome its mounting debts. Ultimately, these financial difficulties led to the decision to shut down the institution. The closure last year shocked students, faculty, and the local community, who felt a profound sense of loss as a vital cultural and educational hub in Philadelphia ceased to exist.
On January 10, 2025, Temple University announced their plan to bid on the Terra Building, aiming to establish Temple’s presence in a well-known Philadelphia landmark. This Monday, their bid was approved by a judge, requiring Temple to pay $1.8 million after the approval date. Will Temple be able to save this treasured Philadelphia building?
Stay tuned in to the PPACS Digital Times as we dig deeper into the impact of this closure, find out what will happen to the art spaces, and what it means for the future of the arts in Philadelphia.
